Here lies Barnacle Foods Alaskan Bullwhip-

3.4/10

I first met this sauce on the Heat Hot Sauce website. Bullwhip kelp, also known as Mermaid Bladder, is a nutrient-dense seaweed found from Alaska to parts of northern California. Some key minerals are potassium, iodine, and magnesium. Apparently, it is also a good source of fiber, and cardiovascular health. This plant can grow up to 100 feet long, growing as much as 2 feet per day in the warmer months. For Pacific Northwest indigenous cultures, bull kelp is more than a seaweed – it's a vital link between land and sea, human and supernatural. Historically, it was used for fishing, hunting, food preparation, and household items like ropes, baskets, and storage containers. Bull kelp is also featured in myths, stories, and children's games, reflecting its cultural importance and the interdependence between indigenous peoples and the sea. Let’s get into the review!

REVIEW: Having had pickled bullwhip kelp before, this sauce triggered the memory of that experience. You may have noticed that I scored this one low. Unfortunately, this one was not for me. It’s not often that I refuse to finish a bottle, and this happened to be one of them. The heat level is fine, a bit less than I expected since it features piri piri peppers. The umami flavors this sauce provides leans on the side of the seawater brine that may intrigue people that are keen to that. For me, it was harder to taste the pepper because of this reason, combined with the sharp tomato acidity layer in there that I also disliked more than I normally would. Although I didn’t particularly enjoy this one, I still encourage people to try this one out if you get the opportunity! It's quite unique, and it made me want to try piri piri in other applications. Rest in Peace, Spicy Prince

I’ve been curious to try that one. I do like briny. I’ll have to give it a shot someday.

EDIT: It looks like I actually bought a bottle, the barrel aged version, back in December of last year. It’s just a box I haven’t gotten to yet.

As an Alaskan, this stuff is in my normal rotation. Part actually liking it and part just supporting a local business making an interesting product.

I’ve found that sauces with the actual peppers being that far down on the list aren’t good

I haven’t been a fan of any piri piri sauces so far, but I’m curious about this one because I like kelp. Kelp, tomatoes, and chilies sounds like it would go great on some halibut.
